How to Make Percussion in the Beginner Band More Fun!

Dealing with the percussion section can be the biggest challenge for a band director, particularly in the elementary band situation. It can be very tough to get them all engaged and enjoying the rehearsals, particulary if the director themselves is not a percussion specialist.

Don’t let them be “drummers” only – be “percussionists” instead

This is the most important thing to realize – that band students are often attracted to percussion so that they can play the drum set. The drum set (or drum kit) is often used in the school band, and often is very important, so students feel that if they are not playing it they have to sit there and wait.

The band director has to find a way around this situation – if you only have one drummer, then great! They can play the drum kit and away you go.

The issue can happen when you have multiple drummers in the band, sometimes two, four, eight or ten! One way that works very effectively and has been used for many years is to have one player playing snare drum, one playing bass drum, and one cymbal player, even if you have a “drum kit” part written out. If you have this type of band I recommend having this setup at all times, and making the students stand up to play the snare drum. You then have the cymbals and concert bass drum, and its designed to be played by three players all the time.

Have an Auxilliary Percussion Table – and make them stand up to play at all times

There is nothing worse than vaguely hearing a shaker or tambourine in a school band, and struggling to see the person sitting on a chair behind the drummer!

When playing tambourine, triangle or shaker – these instruments are often more critical to the sound of the band than the snare drum or drum set, so therefore they must be taken really seriously.. by the band director as well as by the players.

So always have a “traps” table with everything in easy reach. Its not expensive to set one up or buy one of the available professional models.

The players must always stand up to play, and have their music stand set up so that they can look immediately over it at the band conductor.

Warming up – please don’t ignore us!

I’ve been a percussionist in a school band… there is nothing more frustrating that spending your time sitting in the school band room while you wait for the wind players to tune up and warm up. Often the band director will spend up to half an hour warming the players up – and expect the percussionists to remain quiet during that time.

How to deal with it?

- If youre going to warm up for half an hour…. Tell the percussion section to arrive later than the rest! – it makes no difference to you and its better than them being a distraction!

- Why not send them into a different room for their own section rehearsal during this time? Get a specialist teacher or assistant to work with them on their parts

- Use predefined warm-up routines that go along with what you are doing with the wind players. (doesn’t always work, but can do depending on the materials you have)

Be prepared to supplement the band book

When I helped out with beginner bands I found it necessary to supplement the band books that the students were using with additional materials – often the materials are not interesting or they don’t have enough variety to keep the students engaged in the materials.

They’ll need lots of work on basic rudiments and rolls – often the band books don’t address those things early enough. So therefore you may be able to supplement it with other material which is available online and in books.

Everyone playing mallets?

I’m going to leave this up to you – it depends on the different personalities in each of the bands you have. One popular series of band books the “standard of excellence” has snare drum/bass drum on the left hand pages of the book, and mallet percussion on the right. Another type the “essential elements” has one snare drum and one mallet percussion book.

I think that percussionists should rotate and do as much as possible, and if that means that they each need two books, whereas every other member of the band needs only one.. then that’s the way it should be!

There are no quick fixes to make percussion better in the beginner band, but hopefully this article can give you one or two ideas that will help!

Kevin Tuck has worked as a private music teacher (a percussion specialist) and as a classroom music teacher. Kevin has run his own very successful music school, and now runs The Fun Music Company, an internet publishing company helping music teachers and authors publish music and educational materials on the internet. Musicians: How to find band members

Looking for band members is never an easy task. You may first
want to ask yourself what exactly you’re looking for – whether
it is to join an existing band or find individual members to
start your own band. Obviously, both have their differences and
this should be answered first before you start your grueling
search.

Join an existing band. This is a great way for
enthusiastic musicians to gain some playing experience right
away, although it is sometimes harder to find these kinds of
opportunities. These are established bands that are looking for
single or multiple members for various reasons (their guitarist
overdosed on cocaine, bass player got fired for drinking
problems, etc). This might go without saying, but make sure you
really do like the type of music a band plays before deciding to
join their group! There are many musicians I know that play in a
band where they don’t even like the music they play, all just to
“gain experience” to get their foot in the door and hopefully
move on to greener pastures. It can’t be stressed enough that if
you don’t like the music you play, you’re going to do a
half-assed job at it, so why bother?

Also, know your playing experience and limits. For example, if
you’ve only started playing guitar learning all Green Day songs
for a few months, don’t expect to join a thrash metal band that
requires you to do sweep-picking, fast arpeggios, or any other
insane guitar techniques. Make sure you choose a band where the
technicality of the music they play is comfortable with your own
skill level as a musician.

A huge advantage for joining an established band (maybe) is that
most of the back-end stuff is already taken care of. This
includes tasks such as finding an agent/manager to book your
gigs, song development, contracts with music labels, etc. All
you have to do is show up for rehearsals and play shows as
scheduled.

A good resource to start finding these bands in need is going to
your local rehearsal studios where most of them lurk. These are
places where any musician can pay for a room to rehearse. Best
of all, all the musicians you find there are often in your local
area. Check out the bulletin boards where frequent bands post up
classified ads that may go something like:

“Looking to join a band that rocks?! We are in need of a
guitar player with lots of experience! Our influences include:
Megadeth, In Flames, Black Sabbath, and many more! If
interested, please contact Todd at xxxxxxxxxx.”

Or even better yet, post up your own classified ad on the
bulletin board so bands can contact you instead. Local,
independent music stores often have a bulletin board for
classified ads as well. These are some of the best free ways to
find band members in your area.

Disadvantages of joining an existing band. First and
foremost, you have to learn all their songs usually in a limited
period of time. The band might have a show coming up and you
have to be able to play all their songs flawlessly
note-for-note. Needless to say, this might be stressful for some
musicians (except if their music is very straight forward and
easy with pure 3 note power chords).

Another disadvantage is often your own music creativity is
limited. Most bands prefer their original tunes to be played and
carried on without any radical change. For example, if you just
joined a band and replaced their old guitarist, the way the
former guitarist played a particular solo, is the way the band
wants it to be played by you. Often you must follow the same
note structure of a music piece composed by another musician.

Organizing your own band. This is where you try to find
individual musicians to start a new band, usually with similar
music skills and backgrounds. Thinking of starting a band is the
easy part, but the actual process of searching for the right
people is harder than most people think. There are tons of
musicians out there in the world but only a small percentage of
those you may be compatible with. In addition, ask yourself: are
you going to play in a band just for fun, or are you trying to
make a living out of it? This will influence where you are going
to start looking.

The internet is becoming a popular method for musicians to find
other musicians. If you search “looking for musicians” in
Google, you will easily find over 12,400,000 results – so how do
you find what you’re looking for? Many ads posted in classifieds
sections and on popular music forums will vaguely have
descriptions such as this:

“Guitar player looking to form a band.”

Well, that’s just great.

Try refining your search to keywords such as the area you are
in, what position you are looking for, etc. Example: “Looking
for bass players in Toronto”. The first search result is an ad
posted on www.craigslist.org, which by the way is an excellent
place to get started. Try to only focus your attention on
well-written ads that describe the musician, which includes how
much playing experience he/she has, the types of music they are
willing to play, and the intention of playing in a band. Or you
may also want to post your own ad in music community forums and
add a link to your audio/video samples that will likely interest
more candidates. Audio/video samples that show off your best
work are often the most influential factor of candidates
contacting you back.

Be consistent with this. Chances are you won’t find someone
right away on your first few posts, so try to refresh your ads
on a weekly basis (but don’t spam!).

The internet is a large resource but don’t just rely solely on
it. You may find you have better luck looking in local
magazine’s classifieds ads section where it’s more direct. Also,
because musicians have to pay to get their ads published in
magazines, it shows that they are more serious about organizing
a band.

Don’t limit yourself in a location. If you are serious
about starting a career as a musician, you don’t just search for
bands or members only in your local area. Living in smaller
towns and cities won’t give you very many options in choosing
the right band or member for you. Expand yourself to larger
urban cities where the potential to find band members is
greater.

Finding band members is like finding a good job. Know exactly
what you want before searching, always have a good portfolio
ready, and be consistent in your pursue. Goodluck!

Setting the Mood – Whether to Hire a Live Band or Dj for your Celebration

Music. It has the power to inspire the guests at your wedding reception to get out on the dance floor and boogie. It has the power to make your first dance as husband and wife emotional and unforgettable. It can be used to set a quiet, romantic mood during dinner and to create memorable moments on the dance floor that your guests will recall for years to come.

So choosing the person or people who create the soundtrack for one of the biggest moments in your life is an important decision. Music can make or break a party, and you need to find performers who understand that, whether they are DJs or bandleaders.

The first major decision you’re likely to make when planning the music for your reception is whether to choose a band or a DJ. The major distinction between the two begins with price. DJs can range anywhere from $300 to $1,200, whereas live bands can cost more than $2,500. But before you decide on price alone, consider the possibilities.

Live it up: When you’re throwing an elegant affair like a wedding reception, little else compares to the thrill and electricity that a live band can bring. The interactive nature of live entertainment can add a personal touch to your event.

A great vocalist can sing your favorite songs to you during your first dance as wife and husband. Live singers and musicians have a flexibility to be creative and personalize their performance for you. For example, bandleaders can research alternatives to more traditional wedding songs, or they might even explore a bride and groom’s relationship to determine what song would be most fitting for their first dance together. This flexibility and interactivity creates an aesthetic that your guests are sure to remember.

Size matter: Once you decide to hire a band you will decide what kind of band will be best for your event. With the plethora of performers out there, this can be a daunting task. You can narrow down your search a bit by determining the size of your reception. The number of guests, the size and shape of the reception area and the acoustical makeup of the room may help you decide whether you want a duo or a trio providing music or if you want an eight-piece band.

Keep in mind that even if your affair is small, with 60 guests, you don’t have to sacrifice great sound. Many three and four piece bands can enhance their sound by using digital sequencing. Sometimes power duos and trios will know how to create music that will fill up your reception hall, despite the smaller size. If you’re hosting a larger event, the size of your band can grow from the traditional, four-piece band to something larger like a 12-piece band or orchestra. It all depends upon your personal taste, your budget and the effect you want to create at your reception.

Searching for style: In addition to determining the size of the band, you’ll want to look for a band that is versatile enough to perform the songs you know will be hits at your reception. Consider what kind of a sound you’re looking for ‘ swing, jazz, classical, rock or a mix of everything ‘ and seek out bands that can perform in those musical genres. It’s best to stick with professional musicians who aim to have a great band ‘ not just a great wedding band. Professional bands will typically offer you a broader repertoire of songs than a band that moonlights on weekends at weddings.

Reach out for recommendations: Once you’ve decided what size and type of band will suit your reception, you’ll want to know which local bands come highly recommended. To find out, talk to vendors in the wedding industry in your area. Ask managers at respected hotels and reception halls, florists and other associated with the local wedding scene which bands they would recommend. If the several of the same names keep popping up, you’ll know where to start making calls.

Seeing is believing: After you have a few band names to pick from, it’s time to start making appointments to see bands that appeal to you in action. Whether it’s a rehearsal or a performance, being able to see the band you’re considering as it performs is one of the best ways to judge it. You will feel for how the band members interact with their audience and for how well the play which will help you when it comes time to make a decision.

If you can’t see the band in action, ask for a CD or a videotape of a performance, or better yet, arrange a personal meeting with your prospective bandleader. You’ll be able to better gauge the band’s talent and style.

For economy and convenience, you really can’t beat the effect that a polished DJ can bring to your wedding reception. While generally lower in cost than a live band, DJs offer you variety, versatility and many of the same qualities that a live band can.

Variety ‘ the spice of DJ life: One of the advantages of hiring a DJ is that you and your guests will have access to an extensive collection of music, ranging from wedding favorites that you hear al the time to the more obscure. Whereas a band may not know how to perform less popular tunes that might appeal to you or your guests, a DJ is sure to have a broad repertoire that will include lesser-known artists. This can make it easier to handle requests from your guests.

While you or your spouse-to-be may have eclectic musical tastes that car be accommodated more easily by a DJ, remember to not get too carried away choosing music that suits only your own tastes. Chance are your guests will be all ages, so their tastes for music will vary greatly. To keep a party going, most DJs will recommend a mix of music to keep guests involved in the festivities.

Original hits, original artists: In addition to their broad repertoires, DJs offer you the comfort of knowing that the music will be performed as it was originally recorded. You don’t have to worry about a band taking artistic license with one of your favorite songs. The music is heard exactly the way you and your guests remember it. A DJ needs to take a break, he or she can prepare a mix that will keep the songs going until the break is over.

Choose your own DJ: When you decide to hire a DJ, you will have to determine if the DJ’s style will suit you and your guests. DJs can come to your event equipped with extras like lighting, plasma screens with live action video of your guests, dancing and party favors. Additionally, DJs offer differing levels of interactivity with guests. Some serve as a sort of master of ceremonies during the wedding reception, and will do everything from announcing your bridal party to getting your guests involved in the dancing to handing out party favors like Hawaiian leis. Others take a more subtle approach, allowing the bride and groom to be the stars of the show.

Again, seeing is believing: As with a band, it’s best to see a DJ in action before agreeing to hire him or her. By observing how he or she runs a party, you will know what to expect when your big day arrives.
