Amen brother, sing and drum at the same time is beyond crazy. Went to The Band concerts back in the ’60s and early ’70s unbelievable! Never be anything like them again.
@teeroyism wow- that’s some pretty stiff praise. and the character references are intriguing- “levon, levon likes his money…” as well as descriptions of the family situation. Confirms how almost everyone seems to have borrowed from someone else. Thanks
@pikiwiki Yes. Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist) and Elton were big fans of The Band. You can hear their influence in some of Elton’s early stuff……Honky Cat, Bennie and the Jets, etc…
@wolfcane agree with you. levon really guided the band, there’s definite americana roots in their music. as much as the canadians don’t wanna admit it, the border is culturally nonexistent for a lot of things. not everything, but especially for border states- there’s not much difference on either side, sans Quebec.
Levon Helm, Jim Weider, Stan Szelest american born. Ronnie Hawkins although was born in Toronto got his start in Arkansas. He actually developed the first incarnation of The Band and needed Levon’s union card to play in some areas. I will concede that they (Rick, Robbie, and Garth) are Canadians but it was the southern rockabilly that spawned in the roots that made them who they are and that is why ( in my opinion and that is all it is) they are truly an american band.
Please do not tell people stuff that you do not know. They are from Arkansas and they toured in the same time frame as Conway Twitty and King Biscuit. They were very successful in Canada and even liked that part of the circuit but they are truly Americans and one of the vertebrae in the back bone of Rock n Roll. Please read this “Wheel on Fire.”
the best thing aobut music from this time is that they actually could sing so they sound just as good live as they do on the albums unlike todays music where computers change the voices so much they arent recognizable when they sing in concert and suck live or on the albums
@pgreenlee Well, he was, because he’s 70 years old and Henley’s 62. But my point is they are both great and it’s an individual opinion. Clearly, Henley’s solo work is better if you’ve heard both and sales reflect that. His lyrics are more intelligent and his range in singing is greater. Plus the Eagles are one of the most successful bands in history. The Band was only together about 9 years. many people don’t know Levon had cancer of the throat in about 2000 but recovered.
